What is Vision Therapy?

Vision therapy is a intensive program that trains the brain and the eyes to work together. In many ways vision therapy is similar to physical therapy, where the program is adjusted based on the progress of the patient. A common misconception regarding Vision Therapy is that it is intended to improve the muscles of your eyes. Another common misconception is that Vision Therapy is a cure for ADHD or Dyslexia. Vision therapy can help with the symptoms that are often associated or confused with ADHD or Dyslexia, but it is not a treatment of the underlying issues.

Some of the more common conditions treated by vision therapy are Amblyopia, Strabismus, Binocular Vision Dysfunction, and convergence insufficiency.

What is Vision Therapy for?

Vision therapy is used for a variety of different eye-related issues that cannot be remedied with contacts or glasses.

• Convergence Insufficiency (difficulty bringing eyes together to a near point)

• Accommodative Disorders (difficulty changing or holding focus from near to far)

• Eye Tracking Disorders (difficulty with smooth or rapid eye movements)

• Strabismus (including Intermittent Exotropia or Esotropia)

• Binocular Vision Dysfunction (difficulty coordinating the eyes together)

• Diplopia (double vision due to the eyes not working well as a team)

• Vision Information Processing Disorders

What Are the Symptoms?

One of the common questions we receive is “how do I know if my child needs vision therapy?” The quick answer is you don’t! But a developmental eye exam will assess the many different skills associated with your child’s vision. The longer answer is there are many common symptoms that may indicate that your child is encountering vision issues that may need therapy.

• Complaints about headaches, eye fatigue, and trouble focusing, especially after reading.

• Inability to sit still to read or do homework.

• Sloppy handwriting.
